Chris - this sounds so scary. I’m so glad you survived the embolism but can’t imagine what you are going through. I sent you a cheesy card yesterday to let you know I was thinking of you, but please feel free to throw it away without opening it as I am afraid it will just be annoying!

It will not be annoying. I am so grateful for you and for our long friendship and think it is awesome how many of our interests and enthusiasms have converged.

This blog should perhaps be subtitled "Stoic Reflections," as it seems like that's you of late. I like it - your experience has not been easy, and the future isn't bright and cheery.

You note "Modernity has adopted the language of therapy culture and its vapidity is annoying and innumerate."

Agreed. Your posts remind me of some things my Aurelius I have read. For instance:

"Human life. Duration: momentary. Nature: changeable. Perception: dim. Condition of Body: decaying. Soul: spinning around. Fortune: unpredictable. Lasting Fame: uncertain. Sum Up: The body and its parts are a river, the soul a dream and mist, life is warfare and a journey far from home, lasting reputation is oblivion."

More, we who are Christians have long-term hope, and short-term pessimism.

Blessings.

Emotionally I'm a big baby but trying to turn my mind with great effort to Stoicism. I just go via the most unStoic steps then observe how absurd and unmanly they are.

The loss of fortune and the inability to control our circumstances are the most difficult realization. You might enjoy Boethius.

Was waiting for this post.

The most excruciating physical pain I ever went through, and partial disablities sprinked on top post-surgery, have put me on the path to be the strongest I have ever been; mentally and physically. Only one year after; through misery, confusion, helplessness and my own fealth.

My thoughts are with you, as I've learned so much from yours.

The only way is through.

The fact that you are aware of the sword of Damocles hanging over you makes you amongst the few who understand it. You motivate me. Thank you.

the fact that you’re willing to share this experience with us so openly shows the rest of us how to approach obstacles in our own life ....

most of us can only hope we would be as resilient and tough minded as you are....

The comeback is always better than the original plan. Let your body heal and get back on it.
