Reflecting
Jiu Jitsu will always be the core of my martial arts training. Choke holds will always have a special place in my heart. But there are times when one must throw a punch. I have been working with a Muay Thai coach and am looking to hire a boxing coach to work on striking.
Jack Krucial is an injury rehab consultant who focuses on combat sports and is an expert in punching power. To build knockout ability, he focuses first on lower leg strength and power. Don’t skip leg day! Your punch comes from your squat and deadlift. Second, increase rotational power of the torso and core. Side to side medicine ball slams and heavy landmine rotations are two ways to hit that area. Thirdly, increase joint stiffness on impact. Stiffening on impact avoids energy leaks and injury. Death drops and lateral push-ups are two great exercise to train impact stiffening, especially on your wrists and elbows but also across your whole upper body. Putting it all together, you brace and start from your lower body, loosen as you rotate, then brace again on impact.
Training
Exercise is the single most potent tool we have in the health-span-enhancing toolkit—and that includes nutrition, sleep, and meds.

This morning’s white board –
Every 6:00 x5:
21 Cal Ski
18 Cal Row
12 Burpee 50 lb. DB Snatch
Really enjoyed my last run with my 9-year old; we started at 5 AM and did two and a half hours of Blue Hill repeats at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. I wore my weight vest to even out our paces.
Next run:
Fueling
I eat fish as my main protein several times per week and at least one of those is salmon. Fjord Fish Market is my main source, but if I want something already baked, I found a great backup.
Supplementing
I am both an investor in and customer of Maximus, a healthcare company focused on testosterone treatment. I’ve had great results with their current formula and am looking forward to begin participating in their upcoming trial of a new one. Will report back the results.
Measuring
I just took the fast, painless, and easy at-home methylation saliva test purported to measure my biological age. Results will be back soon.
Recovering
My low dose naltrexone subscription arrived so I’m going on it this evening; it is supposed to significantly up endorphin levels, help chronic soreness, and aid recovery. We’ll see.
Retracting
Ryan Root never squatted 365 lbs., never more than 315lbs.

The legs/lower body thing is so important, and not instantly intuitive.
I'm a big baseball fan, and when you look for guys with big power, they all have serious leg power

Boxing is a beast. Nothing more humbling than being in the ring with someone much smaller who is destroying you because they are technical as hell...telegraphed haymakers work against untrained people but sadly not effective in the ring.
Best boxer I know was an ex-gold gloves guy who is an out of shape 40-something year old but throws a pristine straight that alsways lands on the button. We were out one night and one of our friends got into it with some MC guys and saw this guy throw 5 punches and put 5 people out before anyone knew what happened.
In short - drill technique and have a little speed and power and you are on another level most people can't even fathom.
