The best fitness for jiu jitsu is more jiu jitsu. It has its own extremely sports specific demands that are not easily met externally.

Excellent stuff. I have two very young children at home. Any pointers for training/sleeping with really young children?

My favorite gear for training with little kids is a weight vest and ruck sack. Between those, it is easier to get in a workout with kids. You can run with them in the jogging stroller and as they get older run with them or run when they bike.

As far as sleeping, I just wrap up the day early -- no important decisions of communiques after 6:30 and asleep at 7:30 7 nights per week. I make all my worst decisions after the sun goes down, so it isn't as risky if I just close shop: no more food, etc.

The CrossFit mantra to "program for the best / scale for the rest" works for families too. I can do my full effort in lots of ways with kids. They love coming to the CrossFit gym, they love coming to my indoor rock climbing gym, and love mountains.

Nearly every activity and age have equivalents you can do together. I have an island on my lake that is about a mile away that is a great open water swimming destination. When my kids were old enough to paddle, they'd kayak and I'd swim. Fun and safer for me.

1. The more you train martial arts the less relevant they are because unless you go looking for trouble you project the aura of someone who is much more trouble than an easy target.

2. Highly recommend Zazen practice not just for life in general but for the deep flow breathing and calm but energized spontaneous flow states essential to high level combat arts. Like physical training, you can't just read a book about it and there is no shortcut to putting in the hard work.

Zazen is something I'm eager to explore. There is a lot there.
