For VO2 Max there's the Cooper test. No appointment necessary.

100%! It suuuuuuucks to do but plenty accurate https://marathonhandbook.com/the-cooper-test. Don't do it unless you already love running or it will take the joy out of it (more people would run consistently if they ran somewhat slower/longer to start). I love skiing and am interested in how well the cross country skiers rank in this test (honorable mention to rowers).
