When I'm supposed to run 5 miles, I run 6. When I'm doing 8 rounds while training, I go 10 rounds.
- Jamal Beau
Jimmy Beau was a middleweight boxer who fought in the ‘40s and ‘50s including in Madison Square Garden. His grandson, Jamal Beau, continued the family boxing legacy as both a competitor and a trainer. I’ve been focused on Muay Thai and jiu jitsu but am going to incorporate boxing starting this week. I’m lucky to have a great boxing coach in my hometown. Sharing his thoughts in this edition of Vale Tudo, my friend Jamal Beau:
Reflecting
Many people are unaware of the many benefits of fitness. It can actually manage or prevent health issues such as:
Stroke
Metabolic syndrome
High blood pressure
Type 2 diabetes
Depression
Anxiety
Many types of cancer
Arthritis
Falls
Training
I love boxing and hate isolation movements.
Fueling
I love chicken, broccoli and spinach bowls. Turkey burgers and sweet potato fries are my cheat meals! My favorite protein would be egg whites for sure. And the weirdest food I eat is macro fish; not many folks like it!
Supplementing
In my opinion the most overrated supplement is pre-workouts; creatine is the most underrated.
Measuring
I measure progress in many ways, some are with a smart watch or fitness tracker, progress photos, and body measurements. I do not measure food, just stay consistent in portion control. I weigh myself once a month, blood work is something I check every 6 months. I think if you want to get progress you just need to stay consistent and remain focused on your goals!
Recovering
Sleep makes a huge difference to my health. Days I don’t get enough sleep it def shows in my workout routines. Get a full night’s sleep!
To bounce back you need to stretch and stay hydrated during and after your workout. Soaking in epsom salt is my recovery gimmick.
Mentoring
Best fitness advice was to stay consistent, work hard and remain confident in everything I do. This was from my grandfather.

Closing
Two truths and a lie (guess which is which):
Eat anything you want as long as you workout.
You get results when you put in the work.
If you set goals at the beginning you are more likely to achieve them.
