Reflecting
I’m getting ready for my push-up contest on Sunday…
Push-up update: I practiced with my personal trainer at a pace of ten per minute for eight minutes which felt fairly comfortable. I might switch to two sets of five with a brief break in the middle per minute and see if I can hang onto that for an hour.
Fundraising update: 74% of my goal. If I reach the goal, I’ll match it. The leverage will get extreme towards the end; whoever gives the last $1 will benefit the charity over 10,000x their cost.
My godfather was good at push-ups. He was an Air Force F-4 fighter pilot with 220 sorties in Vietnam (and the vicinity) and then a student and instructor at the Fighter Weapons School. He earned a Distinguished Flying Cross for acts of heroism as well as numerous other medals. How he got good at push-ups: he attended the Army’s Basic Airborne Course in Fort Benning, Georgia. He had a drill instructor who liked being obeyed but disliked officers in general and Air Force officers in particular. This very large very southern drill sergeant instructed his students to jump up and yell “Airborne!” whenever they hit the ground. For a bit of levity on a hot day, my godfather decided to instead yell “Air Force!” Not sharing his sense of humor, the drill instructor got in his personal space, waited a beat, then in a long drawl ordered to, “push away Georgia” and had him doing push-ups until he collapsed. Which taught him exactly nothing, because they repeated the whole thing everyday for three weeks. Neither gave in but by the end my godfather could do a lot of push-ups.

Recovering
I’ve never before tried to pull any programming strings at CrossFit Norwalk, in part out of a desire to not exploit friendship to make the workouts easier and in part out of a certainty that it would backfire. Begging for mercy would result in so many of whatever I curse. But I did ask for perhaps not having push-ups at CrossFit immediately (as in the next hour after) the push-up contest. TBD if I just screwed myself; CrossFit coaches can have a twisted sense of humor. This could be the thousandth time I relearn the “just keep your %&@*ing mouth shut” lesson.
Planning
I had a good chest day with my trainer yesterday and am going to be in a “chest taper” sliding into Sunday (WOD programming permitting). If anyone has any advice on how to perform at my best for the contest, please comment below.
