If squats are beating up the knees, highly recommend good knee sleeves if you don't already have some. I resisted getting them for too long thinking they were over-hyped or using 'gear-assistance'. But I love them now, absolutely make the knees feel 90% better next day.
Smart. I use and love them. The more I squat the better my knees feel. This AM I focused on front squats then hit 315 lbs. on my back squat. Ready for more!
Yes. I have a lot of ways to exercise my hands squeezing but not as many for extending / rotating motions. It is like the feeling of getting caught in an avalanche on a small scale -- you plunge your hands down in the rice then the rice fills in the space so resistance against any movement.
My vascular doc is glad I hit my modest power lifting goal as he isn't in love with me 1RMing -- my veins are scarred and the valves are busted up so that lots of stress isn't the safest thing in the world. Everything has tradeoffs. Now at higher reps, I can know what I should do when my coach says "75% of your 1RM".

The rice bucket hand recovery sound intriguing, apparently the rice provides resistance in all directions?
